Lau Wang Claypot Delights started out at a small neighborhood coffee shop stall and now has several outlets across Singapore. I came across it in Tampines 1, and saw long queues almost every time I passed by it! Hence, we decided to give it a try!
Ambience
The environment was pretty average, not too bad nor impressive, which is expected given the relatively low price point of food sold here. As we visited during the COVID period, the tables are quite spaced apart, giving ample personal space. Hopefully, this will remain even after COVID ends as I hate feeling cramped.
Food
Sambal Seafood – $9.50
I have to give credit to the sambal sauce as it is nicely executed. The fragrant aroma combined with the right amount of salt and spice really makes you want to dig in immediately. However, once you dig in, you will be somewhat disappointed. Why? Because the ingredients ain’t fresh. The prawns were not springy, the sotong tasted quite tough and the rest were average.
Sesame Chicken (Spicy) – $5.80
Similar to the previous dish, the aroma is on point. A good amount of sesame oil has definitely been used to cook these individual pots of sesame chicken. However, even though chili padi is clearly present in the photos, the spiciness level was definitely lacking. As a result, there was a lack of robustness in its flavors.
The chicken, however, tasted quite bad. There was a chicken “smell” if you know what I’m talking about. This is definitely a no-go, regardless of the price.
Service
Pretty standard. Nothing much to really comment about which should be the norm for restaurants of this price range.
Conclusion
Not recommended. The only nice thing about Lau Wang is their sauce. Being one of the most affordable restaurants within Tampines 1, I am not asking for top-notch ingredients but still, the quality of ingredients used is really questionable.
