Hey guys! Kayden here back with another review. Today, I’ll be bringing you a cheap yet good hawker stall located inside Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre, Sin Ho. Sin Ho is quite unique because it only sells fish soup in the morning and at night, it sells zhi char (煮炒) dishes together with fish soup.
Sounds interesting? Let’s hop into it.
Ambience:
As Sin Ho is located in a food centre & market, it can get quite hot given the limited number of fans there. Hence, please be sure to choose your seats wisely to avoid sweating throughout your meal.
Having said that, most (95%) of the stalls in Blk 216 are closed at night so you basically have the whole place to choose your seating! Yay!
One more thing to take note is that no drinks stall is opened at night, so the nearest place you can get your drinks is at a fruit juice stall/value dollar shop beside the POSB bank there.
Prices of Sin Ho are cheap for what they offer. Similar dishes sold in other zhi char stalls easily cost more than Sin Ho. For example, their 6 pcs Prawn Paste chicken only cost $8 and the cheapest I had elsewhere is $12 for the same portion.
Food:
The Good:
Perhaps the best and most popular dish there, the Har Cheong Gai is simply heavenly. This dish is so popular that one employee is hired just to fry this constantly so what you are getting is always piping hot! The taste of the prawn taste brings a punch to your tastebuds. It is not too overwhelming which causes it to be too jelak nor does it taste just like fried chicken wings.
Both the crispiness and taste hit the bullseye while keeping its price low. This dish is a must-try, I highly recommend it.
Sambal Kang Kong, a staple in my Singaporean’s zhi char order list. This dish is executed nicely, balancing a mix of saltiness and spiciness. However, if you are someone who prefers a lighter taste preference, this might taste a tad salty but generally, this is recommended.
The bad:
The fried fish soup is a disappointment. You have to eat the fried fish quickly after it arrives or it will soak up the soup and become soggy. Furthermore, most of the fried fish chunks are covered in flour with very minimal fish which is just so so bad. The soup, however, is quite legit! You can taste the natural sweetness of the fish used to cook the soup. Highly recommend without adding milk.
Alternatively, try their fish soup (non-fried) as their fish slices are very fresh. The freshness should be top-notch as the owners restock their supply daily. As I am not a big fan of fish soup, I decided to give it a pass ><
Another disappointment. This dish may seem to cost a lot but the portion is huge! However, the wok hey taste is simply lacking and the sauce seems to have this sweet aftertaste to it which both Ice and I did not like. This dish is a no go.
Conclusion:
Sin Ho has its fair share of strengths and weaknesses. If you order the right dishes though, you are going to have a very enjoyable dinner and it’s going to be value for dollar.
